On 4 February we celebrated the reopening of our fish market, following a major refurbishment of the facilities.
We were delighted to welcome Lady Saltoun, chief of Clan Fraser and vice lord-lieutenant of Aberdeenshire, to cut ceremonial ribbons at the event. Also joining us were guests Provost Judy Whyte and James Lovie, whose construction company delivered the project.
The upgrades come following the award of two significant grants – the first awarded by the UK Seafood Fund’s Infrastructure scheme in 2024, and the second from the Marine Directorate in 2025.
The completed project has enhanced hygiene, welfare, and security standards, benefiting buyers, auctioneers, and Harbour staff alike. A key component of the upgrade was the modernisation of the Fishmarket’s IT infrastructure, enabling the introduction of an e-auction system at the Harbour.
Harbour Development Manager Pamela Neri said: “While it was once the most modern refrigerated market in the UK, the feedback from stakeholders was that we needed to undertake a substantial revamp of the space. The new fit-for-purpose facilities provide infrastructure to meet the modern needs of the fishing sector. We are pleased that the improvements are now fully operational, allowing us to better serve our stakeholders, today and in the future.”
Harbour Master, Captain Shane Wood said: “Fishing is not just an industry in Fraserburgh – it’s our identity, our livelihoods, and a legacy that has supported families and businesses for generations. We want to ensure that Fraserburgh remains competitive, resilient, and gives the fishers, the auctioneers and the buyers modern facilities to help them in their jobs.”
